Every business wants to get more eyes on their product or service. They are willing to go to some pretty drastic lengths to get their name out there, but social marketing has proven to be one of the most effective forms of marketing. This is especially true for the brands that manage to create content that goes viral. When people share a blog, a video or an image – there's no telling how far that piece of content will go. If you're looking to leverage that kind of buzz for your own business, here are a few things you can do to spark the right conversations at the right time and place.


Get Focused and Target Your Audience

If you are going to all the effort of writing an amazing blog or producing a powerful video, be sure you're publishing where your customers can find you. If you don't have a thorough understanding of who your audience is, what sort of content they love and where they get their information online, you might as well be shouting into the void.

To help your social marketing efforts gain traction, get focused and generate the sort of content your audience wants to see. Speak to their emotions, their desires. Open a real conversation with them not only as customers but as individuals who have a mind of their own. Then put that content where you know they will find it, love it and share it with their network.


Don't Try to Do It All

Businesses that try to do every kind of content on every social network run the risk of going too broad and only an inch deep. Quality content is valued because it is unique. It's not templated or worse, duplicative. Don't use your Facebook channel the same as you would your Twitter or your YouTube channel. Each arena has a different audience and a different style of content that succeeds with users. Know your strengths. If you produce amazing videos, YouTube is an obvious choice. You can cross-pollinate your channels by sharing the same content, but don't rely solely on your blog content to populate your Twitter feed. Be selective and don't waste your time trying to do it all. If you only do one thing, do it very well.


Be Visible

Customers and partners don't share content from pages they don't trust or consider to be thought leaders in their industry. To make sure your viral content gets the attention it deserves, make sure your brand is getting the attention it deserves. Be consistent. Be visible. Engage with your audience and provide value to the interactions. Only then will you get the return on investment you deserve.
